In this workshop participants will actively engage in collaborative methods and strategies towards making original performance. Genesis will share their own devising process which includes movement based practices, text and sound improvisations, and Viewpoints composition.

Based in Chicago, Genesis is an artistic partnership between Amanda Dunne Acevedo and Lindsey Barlag Thornton. Through collaborative and interdisciplinary experimentation, Genesis creates performance that intentionally considers space and audience. Genesis values curiosity, discovery and passion in our artistic practice and relationships. Genesis curates and produces the bi-yearly event, HybridSalon, an evening of interdisciplinary performance made in collaboration.

Lindsey Barlag Thornton’s theatre, performance and installation based work has been seen at/with 2nd Floor Rear, Archer Ballroom, Chicago Home Theatre Project, The Copernicus Center, Defibrillator Gallery, The Gift Theatre, The Haggerty Museum in Milwaukee, HI typ/O, Links Hall, Hyde Park Art Center, IN>TIME 16 Performance Festival, Mana Contemporary, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Sullivan Galleries, Tritriangle Gallery, Tympanic Theatre, and Whitebox Studio Gallery, as well as in abandoned storefronts and on the streets of Chicago. Lindsey is a MFA graduate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where for the last two years she has produced The New Blood Performance Festival at Links Hall. She has taught theatre and performance for Fringe Benefits at universities in the UK and Australia, for the Playwright Discovery Program at The Kennedy Center in D.C., and in Chicago for American Theatre Company, Auditorium Theatre, Gift Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, and Writers’ Theatre. Lindsey currently teaches Movement at ChiArts, Chicago’s only public high school for the arts, and is a teaching artist at the Museum of Contemporary Art. lindseybarlagthornton.com
Amanda Dunne Acevedo is an artist, deviser, curator and arts educator. Her work has been seen at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Links Hall, South Side Story Club, Chicago Artists Month and the Chicago Home Theatre Project. She has artistically collaborated with Dandelion Theatre, Vintage Theatre Collective, Red Tape, and Tympanic Theatre Company, where she is an Artistic Associate. She has curated multidisciplinary arts events for Around the Coyote, Genesis, and Tympanic. Amanda is the Director of Education at Northlight Theatre, a Lead Teaching Artist with Steppenwolf Theatre Company, taught the 2016-17 Teaching Artist Seminar and Practicum course at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and is a Field Leader for Ingenuity’s Partnerships and Professional Learning Track. She has studied arts education at Lincoln Center, the Teaching Artist Development (TAD) Studio at Columbia College Chicago, and will be attending Harvard this fall to study for a Masters in Arts in Education.
