Symposium: Embodied Cognition and Communities of Practice

Location: 16 Borland Building (ADRI)

NOTE: An associated Dialogue led by Michael Anderson and titled "The Blue Collar Brain: How Your Mind Really Works" will be held in the ADRI from noon-1pm on Tuesday, March 21.

Embodied Cognition is an interdisciplinary research program exploring the ways brains, bodies, and environment interact to shape thinking and doing. Lead by noted neuroscientist Michael L. Anderson, we have gathered a panel of practitioners from different areas for a robust conversation about how embodied cognition can transform fundamental thinking and practices in different domains. A better understanding of the relationships between our brains, bodies and environments is naturally essential for improving learning, studio practice, healing, and social discourse. But the questions are made even more pressing by our world of iphones, digital medical records, tele-presence, virtual reality, and the rapidly changing ways we interface with the world and one another. Registration is not required, but RSVPs via the Facebook Event are encouraged.

The ADRI’s intent for hosting this conversation is two-fold:

  1. To offer approachable windows of understanding for how embodied (extended, grounded, situated) cognition might be useful in different practical applications.
  2. Using the bridge of embodied cognition, to link communities of practitioners from different domains of research and studio practice.

Panelists include:

Andrew Belser - Theatre, ADRI Director

Joe Julian, MD - Sculpture, Neurology - ADRI Lead Investigator in Applied Neuroscience

Paul Haidet, MD - Family medicine, faculty Penn State Hershey College of Medicine
