Embedded Faculty RESEARCH GRANTS
2018-2020 Request for Proposals:
The ADRI Embedded Researcher program provides seed funding for the research and creative activity of faculty in the College of Arts and Architecture. The current request for proposals is for faculty who will be working in the ADRI for a two-year period starting in August 2018 and concluding in August 2020. The selection committee will select 3-5 new projects for the 2018-2020 embedded residency period.
Preference will be given to projects that:
- are cross-disciplinary, preferably linking with researchers from colleges outside of the College of Arts and Architecture.
- have a high probability of attracting outside funding during the two-year residency, and beyond.
- demonstrate substantial possibilities for national and international visibility.
- will make considerable use of the ADRI space and research community, while contributing to an ongoing calendar of ADRI events and project showings.
- make a significant contribution to the applicant’s field, thereby increasing the reputation of arts or design based research at Penn State.

AWARD:
$5,000 and invitation to join the ADRI as an embedded researcher with access to the ADRI space and support, including use of ADRI space, equipment, and technology; publicity and marketing support for ADRI-related events; external funding guidance and administration; and access to ADRI collaborative partners across Penn State. ELIGIBILITY:
Faculty with an appointment that ends no earlier than June 30, 2021 in the College of Arts and Architecture are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to tenure track or tenured faculty.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
All applications must include the following:
1) Cover page with applicant’s name, professorial rank and academic title, contact information (including campus address), project title, and names, titles, and professional affiliations of cross-disciplinary project collaborators and/or potential collaborators.
2) Description of project (not exceeding 4 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font), including:
- Plan of work (specific procedures, methodology, resources, timeline for project completion).
- Anticipated outcome and dissemination schedule: i.e., publication (specify publication venue, known or anticipated); exhibition (specify exhibition venue); performance (specify performance venue)
- Plan for submitting funding applications, including: proposed schedule, path toward significant funding, and identified funding agencies and foundations
- Proposed use of ADRI space and collaborations/interactions with current ADRI resident faculty (see ADRI website)
- Proposed contributions (2-4) to ADRI programming in the form of presentations, workshops, and/or performances showcasing the progress of work
- Significance of the project to the discipline and to the faculty member’s professional development.
4) A concise curriculum vitae, not exceeding four pages, including previous internal (department, college, university) and external funding.
Applicants may also submit one set of supplementary materials (such as documentation of exhibitions or works of art, publications, or recordings) to Barbara Cutler. These materials will be returned to the applicant at the conclusion of the review process.
SUBMISSION PROCESS:
Applications must be submitted as a PDF file to Barbara Cutler, A&A Grants and Contracts Coordinator (bac31@psu.edu - 101 Borland Building.) no later than 5:00 PM, April 20, 2018.
REVIEW PROCESS:
Proposals will be evaluated by the ADRI Director and a committee appointed by the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development. Funding decisions will be announced by June 1, 2018.
ANNUAL REPORTS:
Recipients of ADRI Embedded Research Grants are required to submit an annual written report on their activities at the conclusion of the first and second years of the ADRI residency. The report will follow the guidelines for annual reporting on ADRI projects, available from the ADRI Director, and will provide details concerning use of the funds awarded, outcomes of the creative work or research, a list of outside funds sought and awarded, a schedule for further funding applications, successful showings of the work, a schedule for future national or international visibility, and any future outcomes anticipated or initiatives planned.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS:
Appropriate acknowledgment of the ADRI Embedded Faculty Residence must be given in all publications, publicity, and public events related to the funded project.
