Rethinking Presence in Performing Arts

Presented by Andrew Belser, Professor of Movement, Voice, and Acting

Presence is a treasured commodity that runs through all cultures. In the performing arts it is palpable when performers are living fully in moments, but however fervent the devotion to such practice may be, presence is too often elusive. In this talk, Andy Belser will highlight sections of his upcoming book The Performer’s Field Guide to Applied Neuroscience (Routledge, 2019), which seek to reframe presence using Western neuroscience research blended with neuroscience research in Eastern contemplative practices as roadmaps toward new ways of practicing presence in performance.
