Remix, Code, and Originality in Art and Media Design

Presented by Eduardo Navas, Assistant Professor of Art, School of Visual Arts, and Michael Collins, Assistant Professor of Art, School of Visual Arts

Eduardo Navas and Michael Collins will present their research on the creative aspects of coding in art and media design in relation to data analytics. They will discuss how creative coding questions assumed principles of authorship and originality when reframed as part of collaborative remix practice, and how this leads to new and unexpected creative forms of cultural production.

Collins will present his open-source project OER Schema, a metadata initiative that seeks to fill in semantic gaps, providing a common vocabulary for knowledge production in digital spaces. This project makes possible the remix of learning content and processes using new digital tools.

Navas will discuss the possibilities of open-source collaboration with projects such as OER schema in relation to other contemporary examples, in order to evaluate coding as a creative practice in art and media design. He will discuss the importance of remixed code in the development of data analytics. The collaborative presentation will also offer a set of guidelines and basic principles that attendees may put into practice based on personalĀ  interests.
