Sonification of Nanomaterials: Best and Worst Practices in Interdisciplinary Collaborations

Presented by Margaret Schedel, Assistant Professor of Music, Stony Brook University

Margaret Schedel is a composer who has been working with the Center for Functional Nanomaterials at Brookhaven National Laboratories over the course of a number of years. In this talk Dr. Schedel will cover how she sonified X-Ray scattering data and then collaborated with other artists to create a virtual reality (VR) experience from data from the center. After speaking about her work collaborating with scientists, she will lead a discussion of best and worst practices in interdisciplinary collaboration in academia. Dr. Schedel is currently in the first stages of co-writing a book as a practical guide for faculty, administrators, and job center staff to help universities develop ways to support and assess transdisciplinary research and experiential learning projects.
